Decoding Home Security: Why You Need British Standard Locks

When you take out a home insurance policy in Manchester, you are entering into a contract. Buried within the fine print of that contract is usually a strict set of security requirements that your property must meet. The most common requirement is that your final exit doors must be secured by locks approved to "British Standards." But what exactly does that mean, and how do you know if your current locks comply? Failing to meet these standards could render your insurance policy entirely void in the event of a burglary.

Understanding BS3621 (For Wooden Doors)

If you have traditional timber doors, your insurance company will almost certainly demand a lock that conforms to British Standard BS3621. This standard applies to mortice deadlocks (locks that are embedded into the wood of the door). To achieve a BS3621 rating, a lock is rigorously tested against drilling, picking, and physical brute force. Crucially, a BS3621 lock must have a minimum of five levers and feature anti-drill plates.

How to check: Open your wooden door and look at the metal faceplate of the lock embedded in the edge of the door. If it is a BS3621 lock, it will have the famous BSI Kitemark stamped directly into the metal, along with the code "BS3621". If that stamp is missing, your lock is likely inadequate.

Understanding TS007 (For UPVC and Composite Doors)

If your home features modern UPVC or composite doors, they operate using Euro Cylinder locks. Because these locks are vulnerable to the "lock snapping" technique, the security industry developed the TS007 standard. This standard uses a star rating system, from 1 to 3 stars. To fully comply with modern security standards and protect against snapping, your door requires a 3-Star security rating.

This can be achieved by installing a single TS007 3-Star cylinder, or by combining a 1-Star cylinder with 2-Star high-security door handles.

How to check: Look at the face of the cylinder where you insert the key. A compliant lock will feature the Kitemark logo and three engraved stars.

The Cost of Non-Compliance

If your home is burgled and the loss adjuster discovers that your locks did not meet the standards specified in your policy, the insurance company can legally refuse to pay out for your stolen goods. Don't take that risk. We provide a comprehensive lock replacement and upgrade service across Manchester, ensuring your home is fitted with certified British Standard locks that keep intruders out and keep your insurance valid.
